My Students

I teach in a therapeutic environment with at risk students who have not been a part of the school system in quite a while. The age range is from middle school to college track students. They are not accustomed to reading books and working on literacy so we have to be creative in our classroom!

We are in the Bay Area of Northern California and our students are wrestling with issues of stability, success in school, family advocates, and legal issues.

There is nothing more exciting for us than to see our students light up reading a book they are actually enjoying while also learning about cultures and peoples they are unfamiliar with. My students age and maturity make it difficult for them to tell you who they are but, the more they learn about others the more they are able to tell you who they are NOT. We have been focused on empathy and understanding of who other people are and what their lives were like and my students have really been responding to the depression era in our classroom. This new group of class sets of books will give us the material we need to fully explore this time in a florid and fulfilling way.

My Project

These books are exciting, well written and timely explorations of the early twentieth century and the Great Depression in particular. My students have some difficulty finding a way in to appreciate peoples and places different from what they know personally. These books are great examples of exciting materials that will engage the students in our literacy program and they are truly hungry for this material. The success we have found in our initial attempts to teach this time and place have been quite rewarding for both the students and ourselves seeing their enthusiasm for new material that they can relate to and enjoy consuming the curriculum wholeheartedly! Each one of these books targets students at different levels of academic ability and gives the opportunity to develop related materials and classroom activities that benefit from and supplement this teaching arc for the early twentieth century in the United States. We can't wait to get started on this and our students can't either.

This literacy project will help us to complete a classroom library and our reading class to have full class sets of these books that our students have literally used up the original single copies of these books.

These full sets will enable us to guarantee a longer life for these books, so many many more students will get the benefit from these great tools that we are ready to use and the kids are ready to read voraciously!
