This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I love science and so should my students." Do you remember the 1st time you dissected a frog or learned about Genetics? My students have never dissected a frog, but they have drive and desire to change the science community.

Our school has a large Hispanic and African American population.

About 70% of our students are in the free and reduced lunch programs. Many of them come from very poor families and are the bread winners for the family. These students are often responsible for the care of younger siblings and for much of the housework when they come home from school, because their parents work long hours and odd shifts. Many of my students are also independent, raising children with little to no parental guidance.

My Project

The frogs will be used to aid student understanding of anatomy. They will dissect the frogs and identify the function, parts, and reproduction patterns. The "fruit fly" will be used to test genetic patterns within each fly, using monohybrid crosses. The frog and fruit flies directly contribute to each student's understanding of Genetics, Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology, which is goal 3 in the NC Biology Standard Course of Study.

Many times older children are left to seek knowledge through traditional methods (pen and paper).

Science experiments are often the last methods that will help students stay focused, stay in-school, and aid in the importance in science. Please help my high school students know they have voice and someone cares about their growth, goals and education. Give them a Biology story to tell to their children.
