This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science" -Ralph Waldo Emerson Everyone is a scientist. I want to encourage curiosity in my students and have them seek questions about the world around them.

Our school is a Title I school.

That means that the majority of our students are at poverty level and, therefore, qualifies for free or reduced meals. In fact, 75% of our entire school qualifies for free or reduced lunch. The other 25% barely made it over the cut-off line for qualifying. Our Horizon school pledge: I pledge to always do my best work, to learn something new every day, to strive for academic success, and to be kind to others. I am important to Horizon and so are you. Our students and staff live by our school pledge. We are a school filled with kindness to all and believe everyone is important. Our school has an autism program designed to meet the needs of the students in a small class setting that is highly structured. We have three teachers with classrooms divided by functioning and communication levels. However, within our school day, we move students around the three classes so their academic needs are being met at their level.

My Project

My students need simple machines, shapes and colors discovery set, and a pet tornado to explore and hypothesize about the world around them. For the students in our autism program, science curriculum is extremely limited. The general education curriculum doesn't meet the diverse needs of my learners. The science materials included in this project will provide them opportunities for hands-on learning through a variety of tools they can use to create simple machines, explore and experiment with colors and shapes using science color mixer and the shapes and colors discovery set, or make their own pet tornado. I am requesting numerous simple machine sets including activity cards. These machines are not assembled and give my students opportunities to build simple machines and use the activity cards to experiment with their machines. My students will learn the scientific method and will be able to hypothesize about what they believe will happen. My students will expand their thinking. And most important, they will question more and seek answers through their own explorations.

Unfortunately, the opportunities in self-contained, special education programs have limited students to reading, writing, and mathematics.

I am fighting hard to bring STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and STEAM (adding arts to STEM) to their world. These science materials are one step in that direction. Support from donors like you will help my students move from passive learners to active scientists!
