Help me give my students multipurpose building blocks, a book that talks about diversity, snacks and school supplies like glue sticks, pencils, crayons and scissors to continue learning from home.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Being an inner city teacher in a low income area has many challenges on its own but for the 2019-2020 school year, the Covid-19 pandemic has greatly increased the challenges our students and families face.
Our campus is a Title I campus where the students have access to breakfast, lunch and dinner for free however due to school closures, nutrition has now become an additional challenge for our students.
While families have been doing the best they can to balance this new normal, I know that virtual learning is unable to provide an equitable education for every child in my classroom due to the lack of access to internet and technology.
Even through adversity, I have several students participating in the work I assign and making efforts to show up every week to our Zoom meetings.
My Project
As we prepare to close off the school year, we continue to adjust to the next change in our educational system: Virtual Summer School. Students coming from low income families face several learning gaps that are often addressed during the school year and during extended learning in summer school. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and school closures beginning mid March, all learning became virtual and this format will continue throughout the summer.
Although virtual learning is the safest method to deliver education to our students during these times, I know several of my students don't have the resources they would have if we were still in the classroom.
Please help me give my students a book to further develop their literacy skills, and supplies like crayons, scissors, glue sticks, blocks and pencils to continue doing hands on work. Kindergarten students are still very young and are still developing their fine motor skills therefore items like these facilitate hands on learning. At this age, it is also important to engage in unstructured play, so these multipurpose blocks can be used in this manner but also as manipulatives for other fun activities such as counting, addition, subtraction, and grouping.
My students have adapted so well during this time that during class team building, we have managed to share about our live's, celebrate birthdays and engage in scavenger hunts all from home through our ZOOM meetings. We hope to continue doing this throughout the summer as well and with fruit snacks to snack on while we chat, it'll be even more fun!
