Summer school can be a stressful time for children, parents, and teachers. I want to make the experience of summer school pleasant and fun for everyone. Snacks, water, incentives, and high-interest activities will sure help!
Getting reluctant students to become interested in summer school takes patience and finesse.
This particular class will be made up of students with varying exceptionalities. Keeping them focused will be priority number one. The snacks and water will be given during a "brain break" so that children can move around, have a little something in their stomachs before lunch, and be well hydrated. I want to have a supply of water for these children, as some do not bring water bottles. There are also some parents who do not want their children to use water fountains due to Covid. The summers are HOT here in SW Florida.
To keep students motivated, I use a "Wheel of Celebration" board. Students can earn prizes for appropriate behavior, following rules, showing cooperation and sportsmanship, and kindness. It is a great tool for success.
Creating a nurturing environment at school can help foster life-long values that will make our world a better place. Having snacks, needed supplies like crayons and glue sticks, and water available to all students can have a huge impact on learning by taking away the stress.
