Summer School for the Teacher!

I need to complete a course at UCLA on teaching English in middle school, in order to better serve my students, who are all recent immigrants to the U.S. learning this new language!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Bartkowski's classroom raised $954

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember how crazy it was trying to navigate through middle school? Now imagine that you're doing it in a new country, in a language you don't totally understand yet, and a culture that's foreign to you!

My students are Newcomers, which means that they have all very recently immigrated to the United States.

They came from diverse countries including Armenia, Burma, Cambodia, China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, The Philippines, Peru, Russia, Thailand, and Yemen. My amazing students are already fluent and literate in one language and some in even more. Now they are working hard in my class to learn English so that they will have more opportunities in their new home.

My Project

In order to not leave a gap in my students' educations, I need to first fill the gap in my own teacher education! While I teach English to students in the 6th-8th grades, I have only had the opportunity to take methods courses aimed at teaching students in elementary school. To increase the level of rigor in my classroom, I need to take a methods class in teaching English specifically meant for middle and high school students.

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension offers a course that will help me fill this gap- "Single Subject Methods for Teaching English".

I would love to complete this course during my summer "vacation" so that I can return at the start of next school year better prepared to teach my Newcomer English Learner students using methods-based instruction appropriate to their grade levels.
