My Students

I run a library at a K-8 Center in South Florida. Getting teens to check out books isn't as hard as you might think. You simply have to give them what they want. Right now, our teenage girls are asking for romance novels about everyday people. And that means, novels by SARAH DESSEN.

Our library has 3 books by Sarah Dessen, and we'd like to acquire several more.

12 more titles, in fact. The ladies who'll be reading them have been reading a lot lately. It all started when our counselor donated some books about 'problem teens'. Our kids really took a shine to them (maybe because I labeled them 'Young Adult' books), then looked about for other novels to read. Naturally, that meant scouring the shelves for any vampire / ghoul / werewolf books they hadn't yet read... Today, I asked them if they wouldn't like books about 'normal', everyday kids - just for a change! The girls decided that yes, they would - and held up Sarah Dessen books as examples. More about Ms. Dessen below. First, some info about our school. Around 85% of our children come from low-income households. Most are first-generation Americans whose parents come from the Caribbean Basin. Mom and dad tend not to have English-language books at home, so the SCHOOL library is tremendously important to these kids.

My Project

Sarah Dessen writes romance novels for today's teens. One, 'Along For The Ride', made the New York Times Bestsellers List. And deservedly so. I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. But never mind me - my oh-so-picky teen readers like Sarah Dessen. THAT's why we need to get more books by her! (Now that my teenage girls are reading, we have to keep feeding those flames!) Please take a minute or two to look over Sarah Dessen's own website, at sarahdessen.com . That will paint a far better picture of my girls' favorite author than I ever could. Hopefully, if people are kind enough to sponsor this project, the books will arrive in time for the summer vacation. I would love my girls to read them over July and August. Sarah Dessen usually writes about summer romances! By the way, all of the books that we've requested are hardbacks. That's important, if they are going to be placed in a library. These novels should last several years.
