Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Summer reading is a valuable opportunity for my 6th grade students to not only maintain their literacy skills during the break from school, but also to expand their knowledge and understanding of different cultures and perspectives.
Culturally responsive books play a crucial role in this process, as they offer my students the chance to connect with characters who reflect their own experiences and backgrounds, as well as those who come from different communities and cultures.
Reading diverse literature can help students develop empathy and respect for others, while also promoting critical thinking and creativity.
With these books I want to build a lifelong love of reading for my students: Regular reading can help students develop a love of reading, which can lead to a lifelong habit of learning and exploration and regular reading can help my students maintain their reading skills and prevent the "summer slide" where they can lose some of the progress made during the school year.
By selecting culturally responsive books for summer reading, I can help foster a more inclusive and equitable learning environment, where all students feel seen and valued.
