As a teacher in an urban area, the majority of my students are of an under-represented minority who are economically deprived.
Funding this project will offer the children opportunities that they do not otherwise have as a result of racial inequity and persistent poverty.
The children attend summer school (a 12-month school program) in an effort to catch up on learning and to provide much needed recreation and structure to their day. I would very much like to instill a sense of summer fun in an organized learning environment that includes STEM instruction. The class will engage in activities that are usually unfeasible for our children. They will learn about the lifecycle of the caterpillar to butterfly, as well as the lifecycle of plants, by growing herbs and vegetables. Various biomes will provide the children with knowledge. The ant farm will provide a visual display as to an ant’s habitat.
My students have consistently been adversely affected by both their physical and cognitive challenges and that is compounded by my students being of an historically underserved minority. As a classroom teacher, it is my goal to advance the children’s opportunities to be more equitable. I advance racial equity by providing options and materials for my students to grow in educational areas. The resources for STEM lessons will enhance the instructional opportunities for the children to achieve a measure of equity in the scholastic areas.
