This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The “summer slide” is a term to refer to the regression of student skills over the summer months. This regression results in teachers having to reteach skills from the previous grade level for a few months at the beginning of the school year, delaying the new grade level instruction from beginning. My students are first grade ready, and I want to help them maintain that by providing them with these workbooks and a book buddy.

Book buddies help students practice reading orally and build confidence in reading out loud to a nonjudgmental listening ear.

This is so important for beginning readers! I have seen my students benefit greatly from book buddies in the classroom. I am requesting a graduation panther stuffed animal book buddy for each student as well as a summer bridge workbook to keep their skills fresh. Our school mascot is a black panther. This stuffed animal is wearing a graduation cap and has a diploma, which symbolizes my students' accomplishment in graduating from kindergarten and will make a great book buddy over the summer!

The workbook is designed to help bridge students from kinder to first grade. It suggests practicing for 15 minutes a day and includes all subject areas. This will be great review for my students to keep their skills fresh over the summer and start out first grade strong!
