I teach high school art at Title I school with a large group of hard-working and talented artists! Working in a Title I school is a unique experience. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, a Title I school means it has a certain percentage of students who are at-risk, often living at or below the poverty line. At-risk students are those “considered to be in danger of not graduating, being promoted, or meeting other education-related goals.”
My students come to class excited to create and express themselves.
They love working with their hands and creating art.
My Project
Glazing pottery can be an unpredictable yet exciting part of the pottery making process. Covering your piece with two or more glazes can lend interest to your pottery and augment the natural form of the piece. To achieve new and beautiful glaze finishes, you need interesting glazes that run, break or change colors in interesting ways.
Students are creating unique vessels that will be coated in color burst glazes.
When placed on vertical surfaces, the crystals burst and slide down the side for incredible effects. Using glazes requires a lot of experimentation and practice. Many factors, like the kind of kiln or the kind of clay you use, impact the final result. Glazes can be applied with a brush or the entire piece can be carefully dipped into a glaze bath. Glazes often require multiple coats and a lot of patience to get them just right.
These vessels are the perfect setting to experiment with achieving unique results. Students are intrigued by the different color effects this specific project creates.
