Help me give my students in the entire school books to read over the summer to prevent "Summer Slide." This is a huge issue in young students as they fall back in reading without books over summer.
The students at our school range from a wide variety of backgrounds, demographics, and abilities. We are proud to serve the community in which our building sits but also families and children in the surrounding communities. We have a large number of students who are living below the poverty level, but come in daily with smiles on their faces and are eager to soak in all of the love and learning that we provide. Our student population is very diverse which we see as a huge benefit to our school population.
The world around us struggles to embrace diversity, so we take every opportunity that we get to embrace it, and show today's students that there is more that makes us alike than makes us different.
While the students who we serve come from homes and backgrounds of both love and loss, we are so excited to help them embrace the good and bad life situations they face and prepare them with skills and knowledge to help them succeed academically and well beyond our four walls. Our students love learning and show it in what they do daily. They take ownership of their learning and use their sense of inquiry.
My Project
These books are not to be used during the school year, but rather to be given to students to add to their home libraries and use in the summer months. We are in desperate need for multiple titles for all students in grades kindergarten through fifth. These books serve as a means of preventing the inevitable "summer slide." Studies have shown that students often come back to school in the fall reading an average of 2 levels behind from where they left at the end of the previous school year when they do not use the skills taught during the school year over the 2.5 month break. By donating to this project, you help hundreds of students get the materials they need to continue their learning and practicing their skills with books that not only interest them, but motivate them to keep learning even when out of the classroom. Providing these resources to our students has the potential of reducing the "summer slide" and increasing their reading abilities through the summer months and prepare them for the new school year come fall.
