My Students

This project will go to support all the first graders at my school, including our special needs students. Around 73.9% of the students my school serves are classified as economically disadvantaged, (FLDOE.) We are a Title 1 school with a passion for providing our students with the resources they need to take ownership of their learning!

Our first graders are eager readers, and these books will help foster their love of reading over the summer!

My Project

Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. One way to battle the summer slide to give students books to read over the summer that peak their interests! We read Frindle in class at the end of each day for several weeks. It captured the students' attention, and they loved learning new vocabulary words. They also especially enjoyed hearing how the main character created a new word, "frindle!"

As I always tell my students, "Books are like old friends, we can visit them again and again!" I would love to give my students the opportunity to revisit this treasured story over the summer, and in the years to come.

Additionally, we read and learned from many nonfiction texts. I have learned from polling my students and their families, that many of them do not own nonfiction books of their own. The STEAM book kit from Scholastic will provide students with engaging real information and captivating photographs about interesting topics on their grade level!
