Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a mix of diverse learners and general education students. As a school, we're trying to include as many students as possible in the general education environment while still providing instruction in a smaller setting. To achieve that, teachers and students are collaborating across environments. We are located on the west side of Chicago and my students love learning and experiencing new things, especially when they feel it is a unique experience to our room.

Building responsibility and confidence makes a huge difference for my students.

We have rotations for math and reading to practice different skills and to build independence. It is difficult for my students at the beginning of the year, but by December, they can usually work for a full 30 minutes without teacher intervention during their independent work time.

Including my students as leaders in social-emotional and gaming situations has allowed them to be leaders and depend on positive behaviors for attention.

My Project

My students are fascinated by the variety of succulents we have in our room. The materials in this project will help us propagate new plants from our existing garden to give students their own varieties that they can bring with them to their work locations within the room. The LED Grow Light for Indoor Plant, light bulb replacements, and Organic Cactus and Succulent Soil Mix will be used to replant and manage the rooting process and Midwest Hearth Natural Decorative Polished Black Pebbles and Miracle-Gro Succulent Plant Food will be used throughout the project.

Having ownership of plant and animal care in the classroom promotes community and responsibility.

My students do well when they have routines, feel like their actions matter, and can see change. Doing this with plants is transferable to social-emotional success!
