My Students

My students are bright students who are working hard doing their school work. The kids are eager learners who rely on school as a place of safety and can depend on school for new ideas and hands-on learning activities. They like routine and structure and they know what to expect when they are here. Our school is an urban school that has 95% of the students on free lunch programs. We have many students who are homeless or stay at shelters around our school. When students enter our doors, they know they will be fed, loved, and will be taught in the best way possible for their individual learning styles. Many students come to school hungry and tired and it's our job as a class to make everyone feel welcome!

My Project

Starting a new school year can be both exciting and scary at the same time. Building a classroom community that demonstrates acceptance, respect and compassion is key to success.

An important part of our day is our morning meeting where each student is welcomed, we chat about things going on in and out of school, and discuss our daily agenda outlined for the students in the pocket chart.

During this time, we also share a daily reading from various stories and book passages. These readings promote self-talk, problem solving, empathy and perspective. Teacher and students read and discuss many "what would you do" scenarios tied to stories written by real kids facing similar trials and tribulations. Upon completion, students reflect through writing and drawing in their daily journals, and share their thoughts with each other by creating a class anchor chart. They take great pride in sharing their reflections with the crew!
