My Students

My students are enthusiastic learners yet all learn at different levels. I teach students in 6th grade that have been identified as academically gifted, on level, as well as academically challenged. The students are diverse with their strengths and struggles. They work together in groups, with partners, as well as individually. The students take ownership of their learning where I meet them at whatever their current level is.

Our community has grown drastically over the past 10 years, but still maintains a small town feel.

We try and maintain that individuality with personalized learning opportunities and student "voice and choice" of all aspects of their day.

My Project

My students and I are extremely fortunate to have received a PTA grant for flexible seating last month. With these funds, I was able to purchase 2 futons, 4 desk trays, 4 "gamer" rocker chairs, and 2 exercise balls.

I had heard teachers with flexible seating say how impactful it is on their student engagement and learning, but I was blown away when these items became part of my classroom community!

The exercise balls are great for those "wiggly" students who need to be moving in order to focus. Also, because these are mobile, students can easily relocate for different groupings. The futons and rocker chairs provide students with a comfortable place to do their work- similar to where they might choose to do their work at home. All students learn in a variety of ways and levels and by providing seating options, students who do not feel successful in traditional seating can have choices of where they learn best.

The students have raved about these new additions, but I often hear the question "will we get more flexible seating?" As of now, the flexible seating we received funds for give options for 10 students to sit in non-traditional seating. By adding the items below, that number would increase to 26! That amount would cover even my largest class!

I polled students to see which options they would want to have in the classroom, and used their responses to select the items for this project.
