This year, we begin to implement the Common Core Standards. We do not have the materials to teach this new curriculum. It is vital that my students have nonfiction text at their reading level to help them meet the new Common Core Standards.
I teach at a wonderful school that is full of great students.
Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background. We have a high percentage of students who are on the free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch program, yet our school doesn't quite meet the Title 1 requirements. So we don't qualify to get the extra funding we need to support the needs of our students. Our students come to school curious and ready to learn. With the new Common Core Standards, students need to be continuously challenged at their reading level. They must stay interested and motivated in order to learn.
My Project
This is the first school year that my district is completely implementing the Common Core State standards. These books will help me implement these standards. Teaching nonfiction comprehension is a huge part of common core. These books will be used for small group guided reading instruction as well as whole group instruction to introduce the skills that are being taught. The students will gain a great understanding of different topics and will be able to respond in a variety of ways. Using these texts students will strengthen their vocabulary, comprehension strategies, research skills and written responses.
This project is important because it will expose my students to the kinds of text that will support the kind of critical thinking that is required in the Common Core State Standards.
Your donation would provide books that will encourage students to get excited to read and learn more about the world they live in.
