This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
One of the best ways for students to interact with culture, history, literature, and each other is through music. At our school, we are building a band program for all 100 rising 6th graders to participate in.
Our students are extraordinarily hardworking.
They attend school from 7:40 AM to 4:15 PM daily! They meet every new learning opportunity with enthusiasm and constantly inspire their teachers to try to provide more opportunities that challenge them and to help them take their skills to the next level. 85% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch, which means that their families may not be able to afford to purchase or rent instruments themselves.
My Project
I am requesting an alto saxophone so that students will be able to experience music as they create it. Our students will be able to play the same music as musicians around the world, to learn mathematically, historically, and culturally important aspects of music, and to have doors opened to them in the future for ensemble playing, leadership experiences, scholarships, and lifelong involvement with the world of music.
Our band program will help our students to compete with their more affluent peers.
Statistically, we have seen that students with musical backgrounds typically do better in other academic areas, are better at teamwork, and feel pride in their collective and personal accomplishments.
