Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I made this!" These were the words a student exclaimed this year when she presented her mid-winter recess project on high school graduation rates in New York City. Witnessing the joy that a 6th grade student experiences from using strategies and skills she learned in class is thrilling as a teacher.
Our sixth grade is comprised of 92 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch.
Our school serves students in grades 6-12 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. As a result, we are consistently one of the top-performing schools in the Bronx. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college.
My Project
My students and I would like to express our sincerest gratitude for donating to our Expressions and Equations Project. Although some students are able to afford a very expensive high-tech calculator, many students do not have that luxury. Several students in my class are not able to bring their own calculators to class, which creates a struggle for them and me to come up with a solution.
Having a class set of calculators creates an equal playing field for all students to learn and demonstrate understanding of mathematics.
They can all come to class on a test day knowing that there will be a calculator for them to use and will not have to worry about borrowing a calculator from someone else. Copy paper can become very expensive, so it will make a great difference.
As we know, students learn differently, so the algebra tiles would be a great hands on approach to learning about expression and equations.
