Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a large variety of 5th-grade students. Many of them are English language learners, some of them have physical and mental disabilities, some are exceptional but all of them deserve an excellent education.

My students work hard every day to overcome some of the challenging situations in their lives.

They are respectful, curious, and excited about learning. They have so much potential and grit.

I hope for all of my students to have a bright future and the ability to do and become whatever they choose. The foundational skills they learn in my classroom today will determine their future career, success, and happiness.

My Project

For many of my students, English is their second language. These students are bright, but need additional support in reading, vocabulary, and sometimes even mathematics. Lower level books, increased vocabulary instruction and math manipulatives help English Language Learners to be successful.

These materials will help my students to develop their English abilities while they are learning 5th grade curriculum.

Some of my students feel embarrassed because they cannot read difficult books like their peers and instead have to read "little kid books." These books on my wishlist look like books a typical 5th grader would read, but they are written with easier vocabulary.

In addition to easier books, I also teach more vocabulary, with pictures to my students. The hole punches will allow them to keep these words on a ring for easy reference, and they can practice them when they have a few moments of extra time.

The pattern blocks will help all of my students to better understand fractions, shapes, and other math skills. They also will be used to give my students a chance to create artwork and problem solve.
