My students need to improve their science literacy through regular reading of the engaging and thought-provoking articles in Science World magazine.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For many of my students, for whom English is a second language, science vocabulary is like learning a THIRD language. They struggle to comprehend the complex language of science texts and even to discern what standardized test questions are asking.
My school is a unique high school in the Bronx.
We are truly an international community of teachers and students. Our students come from over 20 countries and our staff have all spent significant time abroad, mostly as Peace Corps volunteers.
Most students live at or below the poverty level and several live in some of the worst neighborhoods in the Bronx but travel up to 1.5 hours to attend school. These students WANT a good education and WANT to go to college. They are rich in cultural and ethnic identity, however they struggle to reach national academic benchmarks of achievement.
My Project
Science World magazine is a monthly periodical geared towards 6-10 graders that presents science content and vocabulary through engaging, well written articles. Each month students are exposed to articles that range from microbiology, ecology, meteorology, and marine science to the wacky or weirdly interesting. Subscriptions come with accompanying lesson plans and every article has a glossary!
Every student is able to find an article of interest to them. They love 'Reading Time' and I love that they're learning!
My students were exposed to a trial subscription (3 months) of Science World and LOVED it!
They used articles to inform research articles and practice gathering and citing information for scientific writing. A year-long subscription will truly help my 9th grade students increase their science literacy for the long-term (high school and beyond).
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
