This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This past school year I received an Oakland A-Z Fund mini grant for my precalculus business project. I used the grant to purchase a heat press where students could create designs on tote bags and clothing items using vinyl and heat transfer paper. The purchase was transformative. There was more motivation to do the higher level math because in the end they would actually be able to make the item their business plan was for.
A sublimation printer would boost the professional quality of student designs.
I learned that heat transfer paper and vinyl have limited lives on fabric but sublimation ink is forever. Having a printer like this in the building would open doors for our photography and digital art students (9th and 12th graders) when it comes to creating professional quality items that we could display and sell to our community.
Watching families realize that their child created the design on a piece of clothing they were looking at was magical. Their pride for their kids was beautiful. Now I’d like that item to last as long as that pride. A sublimation printer would get us closer!
