Help me give my students writing journals, crayons, pencils, and erasers to avoid the "summer slide" that can happen with a lack of supplies or experiences.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students we serve are energetic and eager to learn. Many, however, face many barriers before they even come into the classroom. Our school is a Title I school serving a community suffering from high poverty. 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. With two homeless shelters in our boundaries, we serve a diverse community of students. Many of our students have never had the opportunity to experience preschool in any way.
Most households do not have access to resources and experiences at home, which makes keeping up with the demands of our education standards difficult.
In kindergarten, we strive to educate the whole child and in doing so, allow each student to experience a cross-curricular approach to learning. The children in my classroom love to play, discover, and learn new things. They are our future!
My Project
Research shows that many students suffer from "Summer Slide" before they enter the next grade. Although many of my students entered kindergarten without any preparation for school, they have learned a lot. They are now at or above grade level.
These supplies, along with an informative evening for parents, will give each student what they need to be writers and readers all summer long and be ready for 1st grade.
I wish to gift each student with a writing journal, a new pencil, new crayons, and a carry bag for them to write all summer long. Practicing writing skills will keep their literacy skills sharp and benefit reading, too.
It is my hope that with these supplies, parents will encourage their children, and the children will continue the practices that have been set in place at school to continue their reading and writing growth.
