This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As my students walk into our school each day, they are eager to check in with their friends and teachers. Our school is located not too far from the majestic Sierra Mountains and within driving distance to beautiful Lake Tahoe. The school is part of a very large school district. We are one of 18 middle schools. As a result of opening a new middle school and the rezoning of families, our school is now a Title 1 school.
The families that attend our school struggle to meet many of the needs of the school.
Our school's fundraising efforts have taken a dramatic hit during this COVID period. During the last two school years the top priority for our school has been getting technology into the hands of our students. With many families, struggling to meet their basic needs, donating to the school has not been a priority.
My Project
Kids in my school, haven't experienced a "normal" school year in middle school ever. They are having struggles adjusting to the expectations of a middle school environment. When they struggle, BIG feelings tend to come out in inappropriate behaviors and words. One way our school helps to reinforce positive behaviors is with our Pine Bucks. Students can earn PINE Bucks by exemplifying behaviors displayed on our Pine P.A.T.S matrix. These behaviors are Participation, Attitude, Teamwork and Success. The items requested in the project are going to fill our student PBIS store with things that students have shown an interest in working to earn. Students have an opportunity to spend their PINE bucks weekly.
This project is going to help students focus on the Core 5 SEL competencies, self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, social awareness and relationship skills, that WCSD has implemented.
These supplies will also be good resources when looking for ways to reward and encourage positive behaviors not just in the classroom but campus wide.
