My Project
While I am currently teaching social studies, I have long known the value of reading in all content areas. Students who are better readers develop better vocabulary acquisition skills and are constantly learning more about the world around them. My goals for this project include guiding students to think about historical and cultural issues from times past and to apply them to what is going on in the world today. I hope they will become better writers and enhance their knowledge of geography and analyze the role geography plays in shaping the activities of humankind.
While our students today are tech-savvy and can find just about anything online, they are weaker in critical thinking and analysis, which are extremely important to all things in life.
The materials in this project emphasize students ability to think about the world around them and understand it within the framework of historical fiction. The journals will allow students to not only journal on topics that they self-select, but they will be used as tools students will access as part of the NC focus on Inquiry-based learning. Students must have a balanced education in their core classes so that ELA teachers are not the only ones focused on literacy and writing. Those things should be pushed across the curriculum.
Finally, the maps will help students to understand not how to locate a place but how the location of a place impacts the decisions and daily lives of the people who live there.
