My students are good students, some of whom need encouragement and support. Many of them cannot afford books at home and depend on the school. They are typical middle school kids who are cynical and concerned with how others view them which makes reading sometimes appear uncool and unpopular. What they read is a reflection of who they are. They are selective when choosing something to read that does not humiliate them. Most of the students in my school are well below the poverty line and live in homes where parents worry more about how to put food on the table and pay the bills than getting the kids to the library. Parents are hard workers who worry about what happens to their kids, but often do not have the resources to prepare them adequately with the materials that they need.
