Studying Soil: Collecting Schoolyard Habitat Data

Help me give my students soil organism biodiversity kits, soil nutrient test kits, macrolenses, and pH tests so we can collect data about our native schoolyard habitat.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's often said that as we grow older we begin to get less curious. My students defy this. As the school year goes on, they get more curious as they make connections between concepts and start looking at the world in new ways.

My students are curious and creative problem solvers who make insightful observations as they engage with and learn from each other.

I teach at a Title I school with a diverse population of students who show me every day that, if given the chance, they will rise to the occasion.

My Project

At first glance, soil doesn't seem that interesting. But just one tablespoon of it has more living things in it then there are people on our planet! In order to help my students learn to appreciate the richness of soil ecosystems, as well as help students feel connected to our school campus, we'll be collecting data about soil right outside our classroom door in our new native schoolyard habitat.

Using the Soil Organism Biodiversity kit, students will conduct habitat studies of our schoolyard by extracting soil organisms and performing a soil biodiversity test.

Students will count and identify soil organisms, look at population sizes, and begin making connections between soil characteristics and the organisms that live there. In addition to biological testing of soil, students will use the soil nutrient and pH TesTab kits to conduct chemical tests by testing for nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, as well as collecting data about pH.

These hands-on science activities will not only serve to teach my students about their schoolyard ecosystem, but will also allow students to act as ecologists and further develop their science process skills such as collecting data and analyzing results. Best of all, we will be able to continue collecting soil data in subsequent years and build a multi-year data set our science students can use to track how planting native plants is changing our schoolyard ecosystem over time.
