My Students
Shakespeare can be overwhelming and hard to understand for any reader. Now, imagine you are a struggling reader just entering ninth grade. Romeo and Juliet looks like a foreign language!
My ninth grade students are a diverse group with many struggles.
They were placed with me because they all have a history of struggling in school and are reading below grade level.
Some of these ninth graders are reading at a fourth grade level. Moving from the middle school to the high school can be hard for any student, but it is a daunting task for students who know they are already behind.
My Project
All ninth graders read Romeo and Juliet. For students reading below grade level, Shakespeare's words are hard to understand. By giving students a class set of Romeo and Juliet in a graphic novel format, students pick up on the language much easier. They then have a better understanding of plot, characters, and theme. The pictures also hold their interest and fight their frustration with the words.
My students were placed with me in small groups because they are struggling and are at risk of dropping out of school.
I want to do everything in my power to engage them, encourage them, and help them overcome their learning struggles. Romeo and Juliet in a graphic format is just one tool I need to help these students succeed.
