Studying Possible Futures to Help Shape a Better One

My students need copies of books with a dystopian theme to use in a Literature Circle unit.

My Students

I work at a high-poverty high school in Vancouver, Washington. My kiddos come from pretty disadvantaged backgrounds without much access to books and great literature. Many of my students work part-time (and sometimes full-time) jobs to support themselves and or their families. On a daily basis I see how much my students want to learn and delve into works of literature but the socioeconomic environment many of them exist in does not provide time or resources for deep literary scholarship.

My kiddos are funny, thoughtful, and amazing and one of my biggest goals as their ninth grade English teacher is to turn them into life-long readers who have, through the study of literature, created thoughtful and emphatic world-views.

My Project

My students, because of socioeconomic issues out of their control, have little access to books. This project, in which groups of 5-6 students read the same novel, would allow my kiddos access to resources and new world-views. Reading, discussing, and analyzing literature together in small groups (book group-style) will allow my students to further hone their emerging love and appreciation for books and for literacy. Themes like the resilience of the human spirit, the coming of age, resistance against prejudice and discrimination, and finding strength in friendships will all be discussed and written about as my students engage in these Literature Circles.
