Studying Global Warming & A Fantastic Shared Reading Experience

My Students

My classroom has always been a culturally and linguistically diverse community, with students bringing different experiences and perspectives to all the work we do. Now more than ever, issues of economic stability and privilege are apparent. Many of my students and their families are without connectivity and while our district is taking big steps to try and support families, the resources are not there to get everyone connected now.

While I am successfully providing online instruction to some of my students, many of my students' needs are not being met.

Also, as is so often the case, the students who need the most support are the ones who are out of the instruction loop and whom I am struggling most to connect with.

My Project

The materials will support two learning activities.

You will be helping provide students with a super engaging book, Fantastic Mr. Fox, by Roald Dahl, which will give my students who struggle with accessing reading materials and also read below grade level a high interest text.

To assist them with reading it, I will be recording myself reading the book, chapter by chapter, and sending the recordings to each student. This will allow them to "Shared Read" with me. This practice helps build fluency and engagement, supporting their growth as readers. Also, by all reading the same book, we can share about our experience when we do connect over class Zoom meetings or individual phone calls.

Next, the end of the school year always marks a time to put into practice all of the critical thinking and discussion skills we have been building through the year. The Global Warming text set will allow students to meet in groups (either over the phone or Zoom) and discuss this important and current topic. The additional single books, will be shared through recorded readings with students during class meetings or online instruction.

These materials will add depth to the challenging learning environment we find ourselves in now and end the year with excitement and high interest!
