Second graders begin their year in literacy focusing on exploring the narrative genre within their own personal lives. We use mentor texts that showcase how authors zoom in on the climax of a story and stretch out the best parts with descriptions, actions, and feelings. Too often the material provided to us by our districts is NOT representative of our students' lives and stories. I want to empower my students to see themselves in the books they read. I want them to know, by actually holding and reading it, that authors that look, speak, and live like them are published and celebrated. Students will use these books to participate in book clubs that focus on learning how culturally and linguistically diverse authors make their stories come to life and trying those strategies on in their own writing.
