This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a diverse city with a lot of history, culture, and fame. In 3rd grade we study about Chicago throughout the year in social studies. We read about early Chicago, the Great Chicago Fire, and present day events. They need ways to connect with this new information and retain it.
My students are mostly English language learners.
They struggle to read and understand informational texts in English. They also have had limited experiences around the city they live in. They love learning about their city with various texts, videos, and photos that we use during instruction. They have even helped me to create a Chicago corner in our classroom.
My Project
We are asking for 1 Chicago board game and 8 Chicago puzzles students can use to connect with what we're reading in texts. Students will be able to use these hands-on puzzles and games to build collaboration and community during center time and even when they're stuck indoors for recess. Additionally, these materials will be available for students to check out and take home to play with family members.
In these times of increased technology, many students experience playing alone with video games or with others virtually.
Playing board games and building puzzles together are important ways for students to connect, build community, and continue learning about the city they live in and are studying about in the classroom.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
