My third-grade students are full of love and light and they walk into my classroom ready to learn each day. That gives me encouragement and pushes me to want to be a better teacher and have a better classroom for them.
My students face a lot of challenges.
Our school is a Title I school in Washington, in a rural area where a high percentage of our students eat free and reduced-price lunch and live in poverty. A lot of our students have experienced trauma and lack resources to help them cope with their life experiences. Many students also speak a home language other than English, which can present additional learning struggles. My students are determined to overcome these challenges and stay successful, lifelong learners, but they need the tools and resources to do so.
My Project
Every year, my students look forward to our States Project. From the moment they walk into my classroom, they ask me about this project. It is a special third grade project that has been adapted over the years. The hardest part of completing this project is the lack of books! Last year, I went to our school library and two other county libraries but I still couldn't find enough books for them to complete this research.
Students should be able to learn about where they live and the world around them!
My students need books to research the different states of our country. I have them choose from a few states and then with a group, they complete research projects. At the end of the unit, they present their projects to the rest of the school. With books like, "Celebrating Washington," my students will be able to have a wealth of knowledge on their topics.
