Study Space Matters!

Help me give my students art supplies, a fridge, a peaceful study space...

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Lang's classroom raised $951

My Project

Council for Unity is a leadership class that focuses on leadership skills and self-esteem while providing community service opportunities. Students address social issues facing our communities through SEL-based projects and restorative circles. Council for Unity is also responsible for fundraising throughout the year including, collecting toys for Brooklyn Children's hospital, sock collection for the homeless (knockknockgiveasock) and hosting a food fair for the entire school. My school has set aside a small space for this class/club to have their meetings and prepare for these fundraisers. I was able to secure 3 computers and a printer for the students. However, my students deserve a lot more because they use this space they use to plan, study, eat, laugh, sing, etc. My students are in need of a space worthy of their work.

Many of my students face barriers in their environments, which impact their self-esteem/confidence and motivation to learn.

As a result of this issue, their prefrontal cortex is not as engaged as other parts of their brain, inhibiting their ability to focus/concentrate on their academics. In addition, most of my students come from families with low socioeconomic statuses and do not have a peaceful location where they can work on their academics.

My students work in Spartan conditions and have created a wish list in order to create a peaceful study lounge. Allowing students to have a study lounge can give these students the opportunity they need to begin to really enjoy the learning experience. If this study lounge comes to fruition, I will supervise the students that utilize it during the day and after-school. Finally, this peaceful study lounge will also provide my students with the space they need to heal, giving them the hope they need to inspire.
