I am a 9th grade Social Studies teacher, and C.A.R.E. Curriculum Coordinator at Edward R. Murrow High School, one of the most diverse schools in NYC. We are a Title I school, with more than 68% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. My students come from more than 20 countries and include English Language Learners and students with special education needs. Many are among the lowest third of our school in reading and math. For many students, the transition to high school can be challenging. As 9th Grade Teacher, I know how important freshman year is in establishing good academic habits, relationships and create a sense of belonging. As C.A.R.E. Curriculum Coordinator, I created our freshman program—Connect, Affirm, Respond, Empower—to help students build relationships, develop social-emotional skills, and learn to support one another.
