I teach middle level students who are learning English as a new language. The majority come from the Philippines and the island nations of Micronesia. They need language support to be successful in their regular classes, as well as navigating their new environment.
I believe that language learners learn best through peer collaboration with hands-on, visual learning opportunities.
I aim to provide students a lot of opportunities to interact with the core content they are learning. I also strongly believe in arts-integration as a powerful tool for learning.
My Project
For second semester this year, I will be teaching a class of 20 sixth grade English learners. The class is called Study Skills and I will help them set goals, learn note-taking and organizational skills. Students will hone qualities that they will need to be successful students going forward, such as perseverance and critical thinking. We will also explore social emotional skills that can help us in school and beyond.
In addition to these study skills, I will also be teaching them academic English by explicitly teaching vocabulary, using graphic organizers to write, and how to plan a speech.
As an English learner teacher, I am confident in teaching them the discourse skills they need to succeed. I need your support in helping me make sure my study skills lessons are solid. And since we are teaching in a hybrid model, some of my students will be at home for part of the week and they will need headphones in order to best access the lessons.
