Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember memorizing dates and places in history that .... well that just didn't seem to relate to our lives? Now imagine being a 7 year-old trying to figure out the world around you, much less the world from 200 years ago. Students deserve to experience history, not just memorize it.
My 2nd Graders are curious individuals.
They want to learn EVERYTHING!! They want to experience the world around them. But despite their motivation and hard work, the little ones don't always have the background knowledge & experience to understand the facts involving our history.
My Project
What better way is there for children to learn history than to experience it. My second graders will have the opportunity to read about pioneers & the westward movement. They will dive into photo essays to see actual pioneers, equipment, terrain and houses through sketches and black & white photos. The kids will leave post-it-note comments, questions, and "I wonder...." throughout the books and photos, so that we can share and build our learning as a community. Imagine dancing and singing old west tunes that pioneers traveled to. They will use all they have seen and learned to build pioneer towns, cabins, and wagons with the wooden logs, stage coach & wagon kits, and animal figurines. As a class we'll even explore Bump Along Butter and other traditional recipes. Why? Because kids learn best through doing and playing.
Confucius stated "I hear and I forget.
I see and I remember. I do and I understand." My class will have a personal interactive museum, where the students will come to love the history of the Pioneers and the Westward Movement. Through reading, play acting, building models, dressing as pioneers, and learning the songs of our past will open a door to the past for our youngest learners. They will have an experience in learning that they will soon not forget.
