My Students
Our Pre-K students are curious, creative, and energetic four and five-year-olds! Our school is located on the east side of St. Paul, MN, where one hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Ninety-five percent of our students are children of color. Most of our students have difficulty getting their basic needs met, much less have money for the extras. We are an inclusive setting where two-thirds of our students are typically developing and one-third have special needs like developmental delays and autism.
My Project
My students with special needs are so much more successful in their inclusive PreK classroom when they have visuals to support them in following the classroom routine, learning to follow classroom rules, and for communication support.
Visual supports are non-verbal ways for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other special education labels to communicate their needs and make sense of the world around them.
Children with autism benefit from using visual supports for a variety of reasons. Visual aids expand a child with autism’s ability to interact with his/her surroundings. They can give children a sense of autonomy and allow them to make choices and express needs. Visual aids also help children comprehend daily rhythms and have input in their activities. Perhaps most importantly, visual aids can open lines of communication between children with special needs and their caretakers.
I hand create all of the visual aids/supports for my students. I make First/Then visuals, communication supports, visual schedules, transition supports, choice boards, visual directions for large tasks broken down into smaller steps, and behavior supports. These materials require paper or cardstock, printer ink, lamination supplies, etc. All of these supplies are purchased by me personally. I would love to have these supplies available to me so I can continue to support my students with special needs and to allow them to participate fully in their inclusive PreK classroom.
