Students with Special Needs Learning Car Detailing as a Vocation

My Students

Students in our class have special needs. They are 18-21 years old (students with special needs can attend school until age 21). They are a hand selected group of students from across our district. They have been selected because they are eager to learn vocational and life skills, which may afford them the ability to be independent in the future. We work on shopping skills, household tasks, personal hygiene, interpersonal interactions, time management, emergency response situations, navigation (how to ride the city bus) and employment skills. Students learn through hands-on experiences in the community and daily living instruction in a natural setting. Students get excited about classroom activities.

They want our community to focus on their abilities, not disabilities.

My Project

After much research, our student began a auto detail business which allows them to learn important vocational skills. Every Tuesday and Thursday students detail cars of teachers and staff in our school district. This is our way of thanking teachers for their hard work. It typically takes us 2 hours to detail a car.

Detailing includes:

EXTERIOR (Car rinsed, outside of car scrubbed with cleanser, front grill & bumper scrubbed and cleaned, doors, trunk, hood & engine jams cleaned, clean outside mirrors, and hand-drying car completely).

INTERIOR (Remove floor mats, Clean inside windows and mirrors, Doors, trunk, hood & engine jams cleaned, Vacuum car floor and seats, Scent spray inside car).

TIRES (Rinse tires, Scrub tires and rinse, Clean rims of tires, Dry rims & tires). We will use the materials requested (cleaner, shop vac, rags, sponges, etc.) to supply our car detail program. Right now we do not have enough material for each of our students to participate.

PREP is an innovative program which provides students the necessary skills to transition from school into adult life.

Students learn through hands-on experiences in the community and daily living instruction in a natural setting. Since beginning the car detail program, we have detailed over 170 cars for teachers, and have had three students find gainful employment in a similar field. This program is teaching students the necessary skills to be productive citizens after graduation.
