This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Baltimore City middle school classes are such an exciting group of special needs students with mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, problem solve and calculate, while some of their classmates are focused on attaining life skills. Our group loves to use computers, perform experiments, play outside, learn new games, and dance to a sweet tune.
In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences.
We are part of a larger school that celebrates inclusion. I teach an eighth grade, inclusion, physical science class; a 7th grade, self-contained, math class; a 6-8 science class; and 7th grade social studies. As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to try small chunks of the day with their typically developing peers. My classroom is about building skills to get included. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day.
My Project
Using technology to administer interventions is a required daily activity in my classroom, especially in math and science. Using the Imagine Math, Prodigy Math, Khan Academy and Legends of Learning programs in math and science, students are given guided practice and multiple opportunities to master skills. This iPad will allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. What has been a problem is the school has provided the special needs students slow, very old desktop computers that take longer to login and load programs than the time allotted to use the computers. Once the students are able to log in to the educational web-sites it is usually time to log-out and dismiss.By having an iPad students will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on increasing their learning!
