Students With Special Needs CAN Access College-Level Work!

Help me give my students a PCR machine, micropipette, and electrophoresis materials to access collegiate-level work in the special education setting.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Mus's classroom raised $2,254

My Students

I teach biology and environmental science to students with emotional disturbances, specific learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and autism that are pursuing a high school diploma. Every student has a disability that requires they learn in a self-contained setting, most with specific learning disabilities or emotional disturbances.

My 9-12th grade science students are brilliant, strong young individuals that learn best through hands-on, project-based learning.

They face adverse circumstances daily and have the grit it takes to succeed. We are a Title I school in Washington DC's Ward 8 with 100% of our students qualifying for free lunch.

My Project

This year, biology and environmental science students will utilize project-based learning (PBL) to apply skills such as data interpretation, making connections and inferences, and identifying patterns and relationships in order to answer enduring questions. Students will explore the world of DNA to barcode and identify living things from samples, which will, in turn, extend students' learning about all cells and living things.

In order to access collegiate-level work in our self-contained, special education classroom, students must have the tools necessary to engage with analyses of data interpretation, specifically with our gel electrophoresis lab.

While we have electrophoresis chambers and microcentrifuges, we lack most of the necessary equipment to conduct this Term 2 project such as the requested PCR machine, micropipette, and electrophoresis materials. Because outside circumstances may prevent student learning at times, it is particularly essential that we ensure students are able to access equipment and labs that expand their working knowledge of the world around them. This DonorsChoose.org project will ensure that for labs to come, students can experience post-secondary learning and become exposed to science that inspires STEM career choices.
