My Students
Do you remember when you went to school and most of your work was completed with pencil and paper? Do you remember taking standardized tests without worrying about the outcome? Imagine all this pressure and having a disability to overcome.
My students are 4th and 5th graders who are in an inclusion setting at a public school with varying disabilities ranging from Autism to Specific Learning Disabilities to Mental Retardation.
They are students who attend school on a regular basis and give 110% everyday to learn material that comes naturally to most of their peers. During the school day, they are confident when they receive support from the learning support staff. When they get home, it is another story.
Most of these students are visual and auditory learners that count on modifications to get through their school day successfully. They need extra help when they get home to complete their work and many do not receive the help that they need at that time due to working parents or a lack of educational experience in the home. Many times homework is incomplete, lost, or simply not turned in. The students lose confidence when this occurs and it can be difficult to get them back to where they were the day before.
My Project
If the students had access to a laptop (which they check out at school to use at their home), they could access many websites to practice their basic skills, complete assignments, and prepare for the standardized tests they are required to take every year. With the laptop I am requesting, my students would be able to access programs the school provides on our district website that are not only visually appealing, but content specific to meet their needs. The students have access to this technology at school, but many do not at home. They really enjoy working on the websites and seeing their scores improve. One website in particular, provides math instruction with tutorials on how to fix errors and provide points that are tracked by the school for rewards.
Donations would make a huge difference in the lives of these students.
The parents of my students feel that this type of access would help their children make tremendous gains in their academics and their confidence levels. To be able to compete with their peers at their own grade level and have fun in the process while preparing for the standardized tests is the main goal for each student I serve. For these students to be able to complete a test without tears would make me shed tears of joy!
