Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing kindergarteners diagnosed with Autism and other developmental disabilities. They love to sing and dance and run and jump. Their behavior communicates without speech, but people who don't know understandably cannot understand the specific tenor of a grunt or what a hand motion or a crossed leg means. Some of my students have never been to school before and most of them are non-verbal. Some of them use alternative communication devices, such as iPads to speak, while a few use short sentences to communicate, and some do not yet communicate at all.
What unites them all is their terrific energy and the tremendous joy it brings them when they are able to successfully communicate, often through technology such as tablets.
A shared love of technology keeps them engaged in lessons as well as allows them to communicate through pictures and text, options that they don't otherwise have. We often take verbal communication for granted, and my students don't have that option. Our school is brand new and we are lacking many of the technological options that most schools have to keep guiding my amazing students along their communication and learning journey. That is what drives this project.
My Project
My students with Autism are amazing kids who want to communicate as much as every other 5 and 6 year old does. The difference is that they can't always communicate through words. There are many different systems of communication, but they require technology -- technology that as a new site, we don't yet have. Using the kindle fires, chromebook, and projector, we will be able to give my students a better array of options for communication.
Everyone has the right to communication.
My students need these items in order to communicate and to effectively learn and remain engaged. Because our site is so new, while we are part of an incredible staff, much of our technology has not arrived and may not for quite a while. It's so important for us to fill in the void and meet the needs of our kids until then, and we can do so with these kindle fires, chrome book, and projector.
