Students with Autism are Individuals who Need Individualized Materials
Help me give my students hand made individualized materials unique to each student's needs by allowing me to purchase a color printer, ink, paper, a laminating machine with lamination pouches and Velcro dots.
My favorite quote is: "A child may not always remember what you taught them, but will always remember how you made them feel." I want my students to feel loved and valued. I want to help them become the best they can be and be proud of themselves! My materials request is just one small step!
My students range from 3rd to 5th grade and all are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Children with autism typically have many different learning needs and learning styles, but what is common with all students with autism is that they have difficulty with receptive and expressive communication and often have difficulty making sense of the environment around them. Visuals are paramount to students with autism!
My Project
Creating learning materials is vital for students with autism in all aspects of their day. First of all, my students identify their cubbies, pencil boxes, folders desks and chairs with photos of themselves. The morning routine is created with a visual picture schedule with pictures of people they will see during their day. I often create social stories unique to a student to help them understand changes in a routine. I have requested a color printer/copier, ink and paper. Once the photo is printed, it must be laminated and then Velcro attaches it to a schedule, a book, or whatever is needed. I have requested a laminator, lamination paper and Velcro dots. With these materials, I will be able to create visuals for my student's needs throughout the school year.
Individualized materials for students with autism make a tremendous difference in my student's communication, understanding and learning.
I am unable to reach my students without creating visuals.
