My students need books, like "1984," "Keeping You A Secret," "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" and "The Rules of Survival," for wide reading in order to bring their independent reading levels to grade level.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach high schoolers that have never read an entire book on their own - imagine! Most students are at least 3 years behind their grade level in their independent reading levels, and many are under the false impression that all reading is "boring." I need books that appeal to my students!
I teach at a large, 2,000+, Title I urban school in Los Angeles.
Most of my students are Latino, second or third generation Americans. Many of the families are struggling financially during this economic downturn, and some are dealing with really unfortunate challenges. Some students with low credits consider leaving school...
My Project
These books will be used for what I call "free choice reading." Students are required to finish one book a month and document their reading in various homework assignments. We also use Accelerated Reader at my school, which allows students to take book quizzes when they are finished with their book and track their reading for the year. I read most of the books I have in my classroom library so that I can match books to students based upon their interest. This type of personal relationship with the book is very beneficial. I have been able to raise students' independent reading levels by more than one grade level a year using this whole "system."
Donating to this project will quite simply be the same as placing a book in the hands of a student and helping them improve their reading level.
Increased reading levels in turn will help them be more successful in all other academic classes and areas! I already spend at least $50-70 of my own money (on my limited budget) buying books every month. I need this grant in order to keep replacing books that wear out or that "disappear." Please help keep our classroom library inviting and vibrant!
