When I announce what section of the binder students need to open, it happens with ease. \r\n\r\nWhen students first saw their materials, they were excited to organize binders with colored paper. This meant that instead of losing time searching for misplaced papers, they could focus on analyzing economic concepts, preparing for exams, and connecting classroom lessons to the real world.\r\n\r\nThe difference in their learning habits has been remarkable. Many students who previously struggled with keeping track of their work began taking more pride in their binders, using them as a visual record of their progress throughout the semester. The color-coded dividers and consistent filing system reduced stress, improved homework completion rates, and helped students feel prepared for in-class discussions and assessments.\r\n\r\nFor seniors preparing to transition into college or the workforce, these organizational skills are more than just helpful—they're essential. Each year, this book has sparked some of the most thoughtful and courageous conversations.\r\n\r\nReading this book together helps students deepen their critical thinking and analysis skills while also exploring layered questions of identity, history, and representation. Through close reading, group discussions, and personal reflections, students examine how Native identities have been misrepresented or erased—and how stories like There There challenge those narratives.\r\n\r\nIn the dual language high school setting, reading is active and collaborative. Students annotate, ask questions, and connect the characters' experiences to larger themes in American history and culture. Students explore tone, narrative structure, and point of view—not just as literary techniques, but as tools for telling hard truths.\r\n\r\nFor some, it's the first time they have read a book by a Native author in school. For others, it reminds them of stories from their own family.
