Students Will Glow With Excitement Learning Biotechnology With Modified Organisms.

My students need genetically engineered GloFish and black lights to convert an existing tank into a glow tank. This will help them understand biotechnology and genetic modification techniques and facilitate discussion on ethics.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of anatomy and physiology and AP biology students who get excited by seeing how science connects to their lives. They are invigorated by hands-on science and real-world applications.

My most important goal for students, regardless of their grade level or science experience, is to teach students to be critical thinkers.

In the age of social media it is especially important that students have the tools to effectively evaluate information. I facilitate these skills by teaching students to question and analyze data through hands on experiences.

Our school is unique in that it serves students from many different backgrounds, but they get along and support one another, championing their peers successes. I love being able to support students as they learn to rely on their peers and develop teamwork skills.

My Project

Learning about biotechnology can be cumbersome with all of the techniques and terminology. With genetically modified GloFish and accessories students will be able to see genetic modification and protein expression with their own eyes. GloFish are zebrafish that have been engineered to glow with genes from corals and jellyfish. Since students have first-hand knowledge, they will be excited to learn about the technology used to create GloFish.

GloFish will not only help students understand biotechnology, they will also get students involved in discussing ethics.

Students will learn about environmental problems GloFish were created to solve and engage in an evidence-based debate on the merits of employing genetic modification. I am very excited to introduce my students to genetic engineering via GloFish.
