My students are scholars, athletes, musicians, chess players, manga and anime fanatics, cheerleaders, artists, runners, and volunteers. They participate in all kinds of clubs and activities. They are funny, quirky, and curious. Some are learning English. Many are looking forward to college and careers. They take great pride in our school.
I try to create a welcoming environment for them filled with materials/resources that meet the needs of as many students as possible.
As a high school librarian, I see avid readers, non-readers, and every type of reader in between. Wherever my students begin, my goal is to help them grow and expand as readers, writers, thinkers, and dreamers.
My school is a Title I school with students qualifying for free meals. Many of my students do not have a quiet, comfortable place to read at home. While most of my students can decode words on a page, many have not developed a love of or passion for reading. They have not found that special book, that "home run" book that changes the course of their reading lives.
My students like the coffee house vibe we are trying to create in our library; an atmosphere of joy and inquiry prevails.
My Project
Our school library is a welcoming place for students, many of whom do not have a comfortable or quiet place at home to read. Imagine how excited students will be when they walk in and see these comfortable, cozy beanbag chairs, practically calling their names. "Come and read! Come and read!" the chairs will beckon.
The more students read, the better they read and these wonderful chairs will enhance the reading experience for many students, enticing them to read for long stretches of time.
While they might seem superfluous, teens are all about atmosphere, tone, and well, slouching. These chairs will soften the edges of my students' days, making reading a more appealing, relaxing and positive experience. This, in turn, will deepen literacy and increase comprehension and fluency. Most importantly, they will make students LOVE to read. Reading will be forever connected to comfort.
