My Students

I am the intervention specialist in a second grade, full inclusion classroom. Not only do I co-teach in the classroom, I also manage the IEPs and goals of the nine students with disabilities. In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students. More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. Even with these barriers, this does not stop my amazing students from coming to school eager and anxious to learn and be the best they can be!

My students' disabilities range from mild to intensive, so I strive to make sure all of my students learn, no matter their ability levels, in this setting.

There is a lot of differentiated teaching and learning going on throughout the day to make sure I am meeting the needs of all of the students. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn. My goal is to set them up to be independent, contributing members to society in the future!

My Project

With the constant struggles of extra "noise" in the classroom including fans to keep us cool, the vent that constantly runs, the noise of student learners, and the chairs scooting across the floor, it is hard to hear anything going on in class! With that said, my students need wireless microphones and a speaker so they can present their ideas, read their papers in class, and hear me teaching.

Research shows that the more students speak, listen, and communicate, the more they will learn new vocabulary words, understand language, and be better readers and writers which is why we need a microphone and speaker system to be able to communicate loud and clear in class.

In addition to the research, my particular class has many students who are reluctant and shy readers who read more than a level below grade level. However, despite the obstacles they face, my students are curious and are motivated to learn. In order to improve their confidence, I would like to provide them with the opportunity to speak into a microphone and have their voices be heard loudly. With the donation of these wireless microphones and speakers, students will be able to comfortably read and respond to questions in the classroom by having their voices amplified to an appropriate level.

Inquiry-based learning and STEM projects have been the professional learning focus of our school this year. We've had students construct sailboats and ramps with the use of our amazing makerspace. We often have students present their innovations and would like them to utilize the microphone to ensure that they are heard loud and clear.

It is my hope that when my students understand that their ideas are just as important as the next student's, they will begin to have the courage to speak up more
