Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 3rd grade teacher in a low income, Title I school in Nevada. I teach Language Arts, Math, Writing, Science, and Social Studies for my 20 students every day.

At the end of this school year I thought to myself "What are some issues that hinder my students' growth?" Here are a few things that were on the top of that list: malnutrition, little exercise, and short attention spans. Because of these issues my 8-9 year old students that should be happy, excited, and rambunctious are often sluggish, tired, and can even fall asleep!

After some independent research and studies in my Masters courses I have found a perfect remedy for my kids: exercise balls! I did not think it would work at first and made the personal investment of a couple of balls that can rotate between students that are struggling to pay attention, sit still, or stay awake. I saw immediate improvements. During the hours upon hours of standardized tests, some students were now able to focus and do their best. They are not able to doze off because their bodies are always active. They are getting more exercise during they day when they can't go out to the 110 degree weather. A student sitting on a ball has to use his core muscles constantly to keep his balance.

Your help will provide my students with a very bouncy but constructive part of my classroom. Their rubber seats will not only improve their test scores but will sincerely improve their quality of educations and, in turn, their quality of lives. Many have been dealt a short hand because of the hardships they are born into but school can be an exciting escape from that world. I always enjoyed playing with balls when I was younger but it is amazing how using one as a seat can improve a child's mind, body, and soul.
